Character LCD Displays

Text output for your projects.

A character display shows a grid such as 16 columns by 2 rows. It has a controller chip that accepts commands (clear, move cursor) and data (the characters to show).

You can connect it with several data pins or through an I2C adapter that needs only two. The contrast pin needs a small adjustable voltage.

Update only the characters that change, since writing to the display is slow compared with the CPU.
