ARM designs processor cores and licenses them to many chip makers. The Cortex-M cores are tuned for microcontrollers, with low power, fast interrupt response and a built-in interrupt controller.

A 32-bit core handles bigger numbers and larger memory spaces natively, so maths-heavy jobs such as motor control or audio run comfortably.

Because many vendors use the same core, skills transfer well between chips, even though each vendor's peripherals differ.
